Christmas dip and cracker platters packed with salt

Research conducted by the George Institute for Global Health, in collaboration with the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) and the Heart Foundation Victoria, found that dips and crackers are packed with salt.

Salt levels in 849 dips and 1285 crackers were analysed between 2010 and 2017, with data collected from four major supermarkets in Australia (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA).

While it was encouraging that a decrease in the amount of salt in crackers was seen (-16% from 2010 to 2017), a significant increase in the salt content of dips was witnessed in the same period (+14%).

A similar trend to previous reports was shown, with a wide variation in the salt content of the products surveyed. For example, the saltiest dip contained 4.8g salt per 100g whereas the lowest salt dip contained none.
